From the root ܘ-ܪ-ܩ (w-r-q), from Proto-Semitic *waraq- (“leaf”). Compare Arabic يَرَقَان (yaraqān), يَرْقَان (yarqān) and Hebrew יַרְקָן (yarqān), יַרְקוֹן (yarqôn).
