From Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀅𑀘𑁆𑀙𑀤𑀺 (acchadi), from Sanskrit आक्षेति (ā́kṣeti, “to abide, dwell in”). Cognate with Marathi असणे (asṇe, “to be”), Gujarati છે (che, “is”, 3sg.pres.), Bengali আছি (achi, “am, are”, 1sg-1pl.pres.), Kashmiri [script needed] (chu, “is”, 3sg.pres.).
