From Proto-Indo-Aryan *abʰrás, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *abʰrás (asynchronically analyzable as अब् (áb, “water”) + भ्र (bhrá, “bearer”)), from Proto-Indo-European *n̥bʰrós. Cognate with Latin imber and Ancient Greek ἀφρός (aphrós). Compare also the root अभ्र् (abhr, “to err, wander”)
