From Proto-Indo-Aryan *Hā́s, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hā́s, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁óh₃s (“mouth”). Cognate with Hittite 𒀀𒄿𒅖 (aiš, “mouth”), Latin ōs (“mouth”), Old Church Slavonic оуста (usta, “mouth”), Old Irish á (“mouth”).
