From Proto-Indo-Aryan *Háydʰatay, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Háydʰatay, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂éydʰ-e-ti (“to ignite, set on fire”), from *h₂eydʰ- (“to ignite, burn”). Cognate with Ancient Greek αἴθω (aíthō).
