From Old Marathi 𑘐𑘰𑘜𑘹 (gāṇe), from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀕𑀸𑀅𑀇 (gāai), 𑀕𑀸𑀇 (gāi), from Sanskrit गायति (gā́yati), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *gáHyati, from Proto-Indo-European *gʷéHyeti (“to sing”). Compare Konkani गाव्चे (gāvce), Gujarati ગાવું (gāvũ), Hindi गाना (gānā).
