From Old Marathi चाटणे (cāṭaṇe), from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀘𑀝𑁆𑀝𑁂𑀇 (caṭṭei). Cognate to Gujarati ચાટવું (cāṭvũ), Hindi चाटना (cāṭnā), Bengali চাটা (caṭa).
