From Proto-Indo-European *térp-ti-s ~ *tr̥p-téy-s (“satisfaction, pleasure, delight”), from *terp- (“to be satisfied”). Cognate with Ancient Greek τέρψῐς (térpsis, “delight, pleasure”), Proto-Germanic *þurftiz.
