From Proto-Indo-Aryan *triHśát, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *triHĉát, from Proto-Indo-European *trih₁ḱomt (“three-ten”). Cognate with Ancient Greek τριάκοντα (triákonta), Latin trīgintā.
