From Proto-Indo-Aryan *dʰúźʰitā, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *dʰúǰʰitā ~ dʰugʰdʰā, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰugh₂tḗr. Cognate with Avestan 𐬛𐬎𐬔𐬆𐬛𐬀𐬭 (dugǝdar-), Persian دختر (doxtar), Old Armenian դուստր (dustr), Old Prussian duckti, Old Church Slavonic дъщи (dŭšti), Mycenaean Greek 𐀶𐀏𐀳 (tu-ka-te) (Ancient Greek θυγάτηρ (thugátēr), Gothic 𐌳𐌰𐌿𐌷𐍄𐌰𐍂 (dauhtar), Old English dohtor (whence English daughter).
