Etymology
From Proto-Indo-Aryan *Hnáwa, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hnáwa, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁néwn̥. Cognate with Avestan 𐬥𐬀𐬎𐬎𐬀 (nauua), Persian نه (noh), Pashto نه (nə), Kurdish neh, Latin novem, Ancient Greek ἐννέα (ennéa), Old English niġon (whence English nine).
Usage notes
Forms with alternative accentuation occur only in the Classical period.
