Etymology
From Proto-Indo-Aryan *púHyas, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *púHyas, from Proto-Indo-European *púH-no-s, from *puH- (“putrid, foul; pus”). Cognate with Ancient Greek πῦον (pûon, “discharge from a sore”), Latin pūs (“pus”), Old English fūl (whence English foul).
