From Proto-Indo-Aryan *bʰáȷ́ati, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *bʰáǰati, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰéh₂g-e-ti, from *bʰeh₂g- (to divide, distribute, allot).[1] Cognate with Younger Avestan 𐬠𐬀𐬲𐬀𐬝 (bažat̰, 3sg. inj.), Old Persian 𐎲𐎠𐎪𐎶 (bājim).[2]
