Etymology

From Proto-Indo-Aryan *maṭṣúṣ, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *maĉšúš, from Proto-Indo-European *moḱs (quickly, early). Cognate with Avestan 𐬨𐬊𐬱𐬎 (mošu), Latin mox (soon), Irish moch (early).

      makṣū kanyāḥ sakhyaṃ navagvā ṛtam vadanta ṛtayuktimagman.
      dvibarhaso ya upa gopamāguradakṣiṇāso acyutādudukṣan.
      Uttering praise to suit the rite, Navagvas came speedily to win the damsel's friendship.
      They who approached the twice-strong stable's keeper, meedless would milk the rocks that naught had shaken.
