मेधा

Hindi

Etymology

Borrowed from Sanskrit मेधा (medhā́).

Proper noun

मेधा (medhā) f

  1. A female given name

Sanskrit

Etymology

From Proto-Indo-Aryan *mazdʰáH, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *mazdʰáH, from Proto-Indo-European *mn̥s-dʰéh₂, from *meHndʰ- (to pay attention, wisdom), possibly from *men- (mind) + *dʰeh₁- (to put). Cognate with Avestan 𐬨𐬀𐬰𐬛𐬁 (mazdā), Old Persian [script needed] (mazdā), Ancient Greek μανθάνω (manthánō, to learn). The sound change *-azdʰ- to -aidh- in Vedic is at first glance regular, but such a change is due to Classical Sanskrit influence (particularly the monophthongization of ai to e), and may instead possibly reflect an earlier Rigvedic mazdhā́ with *z intact (as in Avestan). See क्षम् (kṣám) for more information.
