मेधा
Hindi
Sanskrit
Etymology
From Proto-Indo-Aryan *mazdʰáH, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *mazdʰáH, from Proto-Indo-European *mn̥s-dʰéh₂, from *meHndʰ- (“to pay attention, wisdom”), possibly from *men- (“mind”) + *dʰeh₁- (“to put”). Cognate with Avestan 𐬨𐬀𐬰𐬛𐬁 (mazdā), Old Persian [script needed] (mazdā), Ancient Greek μανθάνω (manthánō, “to learn”). The sound change *-azdʰ- to -aidh- in Vedic is at first glance regular, but such a change is due to Classical Sanskrit influence (particularly the monophthongization of ai to e), and may instead possibly reflect an earlier Rigvedic mazdhā́ with *z intact (as in Avestan). See क्षम् (kṣám) for more information.
