From Proto-Indo-Aryan *Hráȷ́as, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hráǰas, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁régʷos (“darkness”). Cognate with Ancient Greek Ἔρεβος (Érebos, personification of darkness), Gothic 𐍂𐌹𐌵𐌹𐍃 (riqis, “darkness”).
