From Old Marathi 𑘨𑘱𑘝 (rita), from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀭𑀺𑀢𑁆𑀢 (ritta), from Sanskrit रिक्त (riktá), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *riktás, from Proto-Indo-European *likʷtós. Compare रिकामे (rikāme). Cognate to Konkani रित्तें (rittễ), Nepali रित्तो (ritto).
