From Proto-Indo-Aryan *śaranás, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ĉaranás, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱel- (“to cover, conceal”). Cognate with Latin color, Proto-Germanic *helmaz (whence English helmet, also partially derived from Old French). Compare also English color, a word derived from Latin.
