सामन्

From Proto-Indo-Aryan *sHā́ma, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *sHā́ma, from Proto-Indo-European *sh₂om-n̥, from *sh₂em- (“to sing”). Cognate with Hittite [script needed] (išḫamai), Ancient Greek ῠ̔́μνος (húmnos, “song, hymn, ode”).

The Uṇādi-sūtra, IV, 152 derives it from the root स्यति (syáti) as "destroying sin"; in Yāska's Nirukta the word is apparently connected with सम्मित (sánati); by others derived from सनति (sanati), सान्त्वयति (sāntvayati).
