Etymology
From Proto-Indo-Aryan *sāmí, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *sāmí, from Proto-Indo-European *sēmi (“half, partially”). Cognate with Latin sēmi-, Ancient Greek ἡμι- (hēmi-), Old English sām- (whence English sam).
