From Proto-Indo-Aryan *swáydatay, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *swáydatay, from Proto-Indo-European *swéyd-e-ti, from *sweyd- (“to sweat”). Cognate with Ancient Greek ἰδίω (idíō), Latin sūdō, Tocharian B syā-, Old English swāt, swǣtan (whence English sweat).
