From Old Marathi 𑘮𑘰𑘝𑘲 (hātī), 𑘮𑘰𑘞𑘲 (hāthī), from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀳𑀢𑁆𑀣𑀺 (hatthi), from Sanskrit हस्तिन् (hastin). Cognate with Gujarati હાથી (hāthī), Hindi हाथी (hāthī).
