From Proto-Indo-Aryan *źʰárṣati, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ĵʰáršati, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰérs-e-ti (“to become excited; to bristle”), from *ǵʰers- (“stiff, surprised”). Cognate with Avestan 𐬰𐬀𐬭𐬱 (zarš), Latin horreō, horror, Old Armenian ձառ (jaṙ).
