Borrowed from Proto-Iranian *Hángwr̥, with an unexpected shift from *a to i. Cognate with Khotanese [script needed] (aṃgūṣḍa), Persian انگدان (angodān), انگژد (angožad), Chinese 阿魏. Also borrowed into Chinese 形虞 (MC ɦeŋ ŋɨo).
