From Old Khmer thvāya, tâvāya, tvāy, thvāy, thvai (“to make an offering, present, or make a gift (to gods, royalty, etc)”); or from Old Mon twāy (“to present (to a king)”). Cognate with Modern Khmer ថ្វាយ (thvaay). Extended as Thai ดงวาย, ตังวาย.
