Uncertain. Perhaps from Old Khmer nyāya (“method; system”), corresponding to Modern Khmer និយាយ (niyiəy, “to chat; to relate; to speak; to tell; etc”); ultimately from Sanskrit न्याय (nyāya, “law, rule; lawsuit; justice; method; system; etc”).
