From Proto-Tai *hapᴰ (“to close”), from Middle Chinese 闔 (MC ɦɑp̚, “to close; to shut”) or 合 (MC ɦʌp̚, “idem”). Cognate with Northern Thai ᩉᩢ᩠ᨷ, Lao ຫັບ (hap), Shan ႁပ်း (háp).
