From Proto-Vietic *ʔɔːŋ (“honey bee”), from Proto-Mon-Khmer *ʔuŋ ~ *ʔuəŋ ~ *huŋ ~ *huəŋ (“wasp; hornet”). Cognate with Vietnamese ong (“bee”), Bahnar ong (“wasp”), Khmu ʔɔːŋ (“bee”), Mon ဟိုၚ် (hang, “hornet”).
