From Proto-Vietic *ʔɔːŋ (“honey bee”), from Proto-Mon-Khmer *ʔuŋ ~ *ʔuəŋ ~ *huŋ ~ *huəŋ (“wasp; hornet”). Cognate with Thavung ออง (“wasp”), Pacoh hong (“large bee, wasp”), Bahnar ong (“wasp”), Khmu [ʔɔːŋ] ("wasp"), Mon ဟိုၚ် (hang, “hornet”).
