From Old Khmer jley (“one who is carried off; transportee; deportee; captive; etc”), which was probably derived from Cham jalơy; or from Old Mon jlūy (“one carried off during military operations”). Cognate with Modern Khmer ឈ្លើយ (chləəy, “captive”).
