From Proto-Tai *χiːŋᴬ (“ginger”), from Old Chinese 薑 (OC *kaŋ, “ginger”). Cognate with Thai ขิง (kǐng), Lü ᦃᦲᧂ (ẋiing), Tai Dam ꪄꪲꪉ, Shan ၶိင် (khǐng), Ahom 𑜁𑜢𑜂𑜫 (khing), Zhuang hing. There is also ແຄງ (khǣng) derived from the same Old Chinese.
