Etymology 1

From Proto-Tai *χiːŋᴬ (ginger), from Old Chinese (OC *kaŋ, “ginger”). Cognate with Lao ຂີງ (khīng), ᦃᦲᧂ (ẋiing), Tai Dam ꪄꪲꪉ, Shan ၶိင် (khǐng), Ahom 𑜁𑜢𑜂𑜫 (khing), Zhuang hing. There are also แกลง (glɛɛng) and แครง (krɛɛng) derived from the same Old Chinese that modify ขิง itself.
