Borrowed from Pali gaṇgā or Sanskrit गङ्गा (gaṅgā, literally “one who goes swiftly; one who flows rapidly”). Cognate with Khmer គង្គ (kŭəngkɔɔ), គង្គា (kŭəngkiə); Lao ຄົງຄາ (khong khā), ກັງກາ (kang kā); Burmese คงคา (คงคา).
