From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *b-ləj (“four”). Cognate with S'gaw Karen လွံၢ် (lwi̱), Sichuan Yi ꇖ (ly), Tibetan བཞི (bzhi), Sikkimese ཞི (zhi).

From Old Burmese လိယ်း (liy), from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *s-ləj-t ~ s-rəj-t (“heavy”). Cognate with Sichuan Yi ꇖ (ly) (as in ꀉꇖ (ax ly, “heavy”)), Jingpho li (“heavy”), Drung vli (“heavy”), Tibetan ལྕི་བ (lci ba, “heavy”), ལྗིད་པ (ljid pa, “heaviness, weight”) and Naxi lee.
