წუერი

Old Georgian

Etymology

From Proto-Georgian-Zan *c̣wer-. Cognate with Mingrelian წვანდი (c̣vandi), წვანჯი (c̣vanǯi).

Has been linked with Old Armenian ծայր (cayr), Armenian ծեր (cer, end, extremity), Ačaṙean considering the Georgian to be borrowed from Armenian, and J̌ahukyan 1987 arguing that Armenian and Kartvelian may have been borrowed from a third source, perhaps an unidentified Urartian term. However, in 2010 J̌ahukyan considers the similarity accidental.

Starostin, disagreeing with various Northwest Caucasian comparisons proposed by Klimov, compares with Proto-Northeast Caucasian *ć̣ħwǝ̄rǝ (hair).
