From Proto-Indo-European *swidrōs, from *sweyd- (“to sweat”) (whence also ἰδίω (idíō), ἶδος (îdos)). Cognates include Old Armenian քիրտն (kʿirtn), Latvian sviedri, and Albanian djersë.
