From a previous form ϝίτυς (wítus), that proves a derivation from Proto-Indo-European *weh₁y- (“to twist, to twine”). Cognate with Latin vitus (“felloe”), Ancient Greek ἰτέα (itéa, “willow”), ἶρις (îris, “rainbow”) and οἶσος (oîsos, “withy”).
