From Proto-Indo-European *h₁s-ónt-, present participle of *h₁es- (“to be”). Cognate with Latin sōns (“guilty”), Sanskrit सत् (sát, “being, essence, reality”), Albanian gjë (“thing”), English sooth (“true, a fact”).
