Etymology
Calque of Dutch waterstof (literally “waterstuff”), equivalent to 水 (sui, “water”) + 素 (so, “element”). Compare German Wasserstoff, Luxembourgish Waasserstoff. Created by Udagawa Yōan in his book 遠西医方名物考補遺 in 1834 (“水素”).
