Etymology

From (tan, coal, also in 炭素 (tanso, carbon)) + (san, acid), calque of Dutch koolstofzuur (literally carbon acid; coalstuff sour). Created by Udagawa Yōan in his book 遠西医方名物考補遺 in 1834 (“炭酸”).
