Etymology
From 炭 (tan, “coal”, also in 炭素 (tanso, “carbon”)) + 酸 (san, “acid”), calque of Dutch koolstofzuur (literally “carbon acid; coalstuff sour”). Created by Udagawa Yōan in his book 遠西医方名物考補遺 in 1834 (“炭酸”).
