Etymology
Older form is ねぶる, from the same root with Old Japanese 寝 (nu) (whence 寝る (neru, “to sleep; to lie down”)), ultimately from Proto-Japonic *ná- (cf. 寝す (nasu, “(honorific) to sleep”)). Cognate with Northern Amami-Oshima ねぃぶりゅり (nɨburjuri), Okinawan にんじゅん (niɴdʑuɴ), Miyako にぅ゙ (niʋ) and Yonaguni にんどぅん (niɴduɴ).[1]
