From Middle Chinese compound 隣國 (lin kwok, literally neighbor, next + country).

After the term was borrowed into Japanese, the character in the Chinese spelling was replaced by , moving the radical to the other side. Compare modern Mandarin 鄰國邻国 (línguó).
