Etymology
First attested in the Bullyu dugongbu si eonhae (分類杜工部詩諺解 / 분류두공부시언해), 1481 as Middle Korean ᄀᆞᇫ애 (kozGay), from Old Korean *kʌ-si-gai (cf. 割子蓋 (MC kɑt̚ t͡sɨX kɑiH) as in Jilin Leishi (雞林類事), c.1103-1104). Compare dialectal forms 가새 (gasae), 강애 (gang-ae, Pyeongan), 가시개 (gasigae, Gyeongsang), 가왜 (gawae) etc. and Jeju ᄀᆞ새 (gᆞsae).[1]
