Derived from Sino-Korean word gamjeo (감저; 甘藷; originally lesser yam, Dioscorea esculenta, then sweet potato, Ipomoea batatas). (First attested 1766 in Korea) Meaning of the word changed into inferring both potato and sweet potato about the 19th century, and later lost its original meaning.)
