Etymology

First attested in the Sinjeonjachwi yeomsobang eonhae (新傳煮取焰硝方諺解 / 신전자취염소방언해), 1635, as Middle Korean 마초다 (machwota). Equivalent to 맞— (mat-, “to fit, to match”) + (chu-, causative suffix).
