First attested in the Beonyeok sohak (飜譯小學 / 번역소학), 1517, as Middle Korean ᄎᆞᆷ새 (chomsay).. Literally "true bird," from ᄎᆞᆷ (chom, "true") + 새 (sae, "bird").
