First attested in the Yeogeo yuhae (譯語類解 / 역어유해), 1690, as Middle Korean ᄑᆞᆺ소 (Yale: phos.swo). From ᄑᆞᆽ (Yale: poc, "azuki bean"; modern Korean 팥 (pat)).
