From Proto-Iranian *nayǰ-, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *nayǰ- (compare Sanskrit नेज् (nej)), from Proto-Indo-European *neygʷ-. Compare Ancient Greek νίζω (nízō, “I wash”).[1]
