From Proto-Turkic *yagï (“enemy, war”). Cognate with Karakhanid يَغٖى (yaɣï̄, “enemy”), Kazakh жау (jaw, “enemy”), Khakas чаа (çaa, “war”), Ottoman Turkish ياغی (yağı, “stranger, enemy”).
