Only reached its present form in the early twentieth century.[1] Ultimately from Middle Korean -ᅀᆞᆸ〯- (Yale: -zǒp-, object-honorific suffix) + -사〮ᅌᅵ다〮 (Yale: -sángìtá, hortative suffix).

  1. Hortative suffix for sentence-final verbs in the 하오체 (haoche, “formal”) speech level.
    걸읍시다. ― Geor-eupsida. ― Let us walk.
    불고기를 먹읍시다. ― Bulgogi-reul meog-eupsida. ― Let's have bulgogi.
    김치를 만들어 봅시다. ― Gimchi-reul mandeureo bopsida. ― Let's try making kimchi.
